Freckle Productions prove once again that Julia Donaldson‘s stories soar just as brightly on stage as they do on the pages of her much-loved children’s books with this energetic and charming musical show.
What an absolute pleasure and delight it was to experience this production with my four- year old daughter who loves the book and the character himself. Bright, lively, passionate and engaging this is a fantastic production for little ones and their guardians alike. It’s not easy to keep adults and children engaged but they did it with ease and much gusto.
Zog’s determination and clumsy nature were brought to life so well by Samuel John Taylor and the entire cast filled the stage with warmth and humour. The set design and lighting added to this not to mention the simplicity of the costumes. There was a good balance of audience interaction and musical performance which made this hour-long performance feel “fuller” than the timeframe given. We particularly enjoyed the puppetry and Hugh Cotton as Gadabout led to many belly laughs. The moral of story being perseverance and self-belief were a moving reminder of why we need to encourage little ones to keep trying even in the midst of perceived failure.
This is a show for all the family but particularly suits 3-4 years and above, possibly with a cap of around 8.
Whether you’re introducing children to the theatre for the very first time or revisiting a favourite bedtime story, Zog delivers a warm-hearted adventure that earns its golden star in fact it earns five from us.
