Not content with just one amazing show, Alvin and crew have another! Well… another half. And while I loved the enigmatic New Works, I have to say, Legacy really was a bit of me.

Where New Works felt more experimental and contemporary, Legacy had a stronger connection to the history and spirit of Alvin Ailey. It brought together pieces with their own distinct character, musicality and deep cultural influences, creating a wonderful sense of looking back while still feeling fresh and relevant. It was a celebration of the company’s rich heritage, brought to life by the incredible talent of its current dancers.

From the moment the dancers took to the stage, the energy was infectious. The programme moved effortlessly through different musical styles and moods, showcasing the strength, precision and individuality of the company.

One of my highlights was Grace — the striking red-and-white piece set to Gabriel, the classic house track by Peven Everett. In fact, all of the music was vibrant, energetic and completely captivating, helping to convey a sense of freedom and joy to the stage. There were funky and jazzy numbers— full of attitude, rhythm and personality. The music of Fela Kuti brought another fantastic dimension, with its infectious rhythms  (the original Afrobeat) and driving percussion perfectly matched by the dancers’ powerful, expressive choreography. There’s something wonderfully joyful and liberating about seeing Fela’s music brought to life through dance.

And then, of course, like New Works, the evening ended with the legendary Revelations. Seeing Alvin Ailey’s most famous and enduring work performed live is incredibly moving. The combination of powerful choreography, spirituals, gospel and blues created a finale that was both spectacular and deeply emotional — the perfect ending to an already unforgettable evening.

Legacy was a stunning showcase of the past, present and enduring spirit of Alvin AileyAn exhilarating, joyful and deeply moving night of dance — absolutely not to be missed. If you can only see one and are torn between the two – I’d go for Legacy.
