Greenwich+Docklands International Festival (GDIF) London’s leading and longest established FREE festival of outdoor performing arts today announce the full programme for its two, much-loved ‘festivals within the festival’: Greenwich Fair and Dancing City.
Building on the success of GDIF’s 30th anniversary in 2025, the award-winning annual festival returns to the Royal Borough of Greenwich, Newham and Thamesmead from Friday 21 August to Sunday 6 September. The full 2026 programme brings together 3 world premieres, 5 UK premieres and 10 London premieres from over 25 companies from across the world (Argentina, France, Catalonia, Germany, Netherlands and Spain) in a free programme of outdoor theatre, circus, dance and art installations inspired by the theme WE MOVE.

GDIF’s opening event. Exhilarating dance, immersive set design and pumping club music collide in this vivid portrait of a generation on the edge of change, by trailblazing French choreographer Mehdi Kerkouche. Gather around a spectacular circular stage as energising music transforms Woolwich into a dancefloor, alive with concert energy that builds and builds. A large-scale dance theatre experience so exuberant and expansive that the boundary between performers and crowd dissolves, making way for a collective moment of ecstasy to kick off GDIF 2026.

Meet Me By The Fountain

A spectacular son-et-lumière reawakening Romford’s lost Liberty fountain, staged in one of the UK’s largest and oldest market squares. Meet Me by the Fountain weaves together voices and images of the market’s 775 history: from its origins, to the medieval, from wartime to the 80’s, from today and into an imagined future…
A lost landmark returns to the heart of Romford — a meeting point between past, present and future.
As night falls, light, projection and sound ripple across the space, reawakening the spirit of the iconic Liberty fountain and the stories it holds. Created by David Shearing, with text by Vickie Donoghue, sound by James Bulley and video projection by Novak, Meet Me by the Fountain brings echoes of memories together in a spectacular experience.

Action! A truck rumbles past with music blaring. A dancer leaps and stumbles, their body moving forward against forces that refuse to let up. Then suddenly the elements erupt: thunder rolls, wind lashes and snow falls in this immersive theatre experience which transforms an everyday street into a live film set. This “gloriously inventive” (The Theatre Times) event has already thrilled audiences in Sydney, Santiago and Buenos Aires. Now it’s time for Greenwich Peninsula to play a starring role.
