Nanny of the Maroons is a new musical play, co-created with Coventry’s communities.

Queen Nanny of the Maroons. Warrior, healer, protector – the legendary 18th-century freedom fighter who was feared as a witch by the British. Fighting for freedom over slavery, she led her people in their war against the powerful forces ranged against them, and in doing so became a Jamaican national hero.

Directed by co-artistic directors  Corey Campbell and Justine Themen, the legacy of Queen Nanny will be brought to life in Nanny of the Maroons, a new musical play blending spoken word, music and magical realism.

Opening at the Belgrade in Spring 2027 and developed over two years through community oral storytelling sessions, workshops, and artistic collaborations, Nanny of the Maroons will be a celebration of heritage, the power of community and the true meaning of freedom.
