The Genesis, an extraordinary acrobatic experience that explores the independence and relatability of human life, brought together world-class acrobats to perform at Sadler’s Wells’ Peacock Theatre. Copenhagen Collective provide a contemporary acrobatic circus experience through their structured group formations and stunning visuals. After performances around the globe, the Peacock Theatre welcomed the creativity of The Genesis.
The Genesis is a recognition of the “strife, conflict and division” that has become normalised and ultimately has caused us to be desensitised to conflict. Copenhagen Collective perfectly demonstrate through their performance that in moments of isolation, comfort and security can be found within community. As a group, they have a powerful sense of solidarity shown through the fluidity and synchronicity of their intricate routines. They take trust and balance to unknown heights. The Genesis challenges and exceed our expectations of astonishing acrobatics, with incredible female bases and male flyers.
They beautifully celebrate and recognise diversity; their fusion of global nations is recognised throughout their artistry alongside their choices to challenge expectations. As acrobats, they displayed incredible strength and coordination, maintained through their smooth transitions and intense jumps that only became more complex as the story progresses. From group performances, to solo and to duos, Copenhagen Collective most definitely know how to engage an audience. Alongside an entertaining dance montage, they gathered the audience with their authentic energy and enjoyable interactions that caused much laughter, gasps, and applause. They have great stage presence, their bond is truly unreal.
The Genesis is a great fusion of acrobatics and storytelling. We follow the acrobats through conflict and division. The audience watched in awe as they formed towers of people and threw and caught one another. Choreographed by Patrick King and Johan King Silverhult, the acrobats executed both an eventful and thrilling routine in synchronisation that created an astounding experience for all.
Composer, Leif Jordansson’s intentionality of his musical build up to accompany the dramatic climax of storyline of The Genesis, makes the audience empathise and reflect on the importance of unity. The combination of violin, piano and other instruments, with the influence of jazz are intertwined to create a thrilling atmosphere. Accompanying the thoughtful musical composition of Jordansson, Stefan Goldbaum’s light conception throughout the performance beautifully captured the raw emotions caused by isolation and conflict. From the use of the spotlights on one performer whilst the others remained in darkness to the flashing stage lights, Goldbaum illustrates a contrast between the light found in community and the darkness.
Copenhagen Collective’s The Genesis is a unique experience that transforms the reality of conflict and division into a gripping acrobatic experience. With the key message of highlighting strength in community and a celebration of diversity, The Genesis is an entertaining performance to reflect on.
