Mama Goose – review

Huge congratulations to an ensemble of performers for a production that is full of joy, fun, laughter and political commentary.

This is  a panto full of punch, depth and reason and brilliant writing and direction by Vikki Stone and Tonderai Munyevu alongside some catchy and  clever references to familiar tunes and original songs by Robert Hyman. The references to Stratford Westfield  versus Stratford City Centre is funny but also a comment on the social changes in the area. How Stratford was suddenly thrust into climbing the ladder and of east Londoners  being outpriced out of Stratford as the Olympic Stadium and Westfield were built.

But back to Panto! Is it good? Ohhh yes it is!!!

Mama Goose (Duane Gooden) shows the duplicity of striving to be good but being tempted by materialism, fame and forever being young. Gary the Goose (Ché Walker) is played so truthfully despite being a goose! A strong, impactful character who also symbolises our battery hens and our greed for plenty. WTF, no it’s not what you think (Ellie Seaton) and BFF (Mya Fox-Scott) are the good and the bad fairies and their performances are consistently strong showing great charisma and talent on stage. Jack (Marcellus Whyte) and AI Jill (Charlie Cameron) have a moving storyline and their bond becomes the triumph for good over evil.

The set is wonderful! It complements the action and works with the story that is being told.  Whatever we might think of Panto… this is a pantomime with lots of  poignant messages with Elon MuskKaty Perry  and Rachel Reeves all coming into the firing line.

Is this a must-see? Ohhh yes, it is!

Need to know: Mama Goose plays at Stratford East until 3 Jan 2026
