SYLVIA: The Essentials – album launch
SYLVIA: The Essentials – album launch

Sylvia the Musical is back! Inspired by the Suffragette movement and told through the eyes of Emmeline Pankhurst’s rebellious daughter, Sylvia. The studio cast recording launches today, May 5 and be prepared to be hit with punch, rhythm and drive! The vibes are strong and powerful, enough to start a revolution!

Beverley Knight is Sylvia and Sharon Rose is Emmeline Pankhurst with book and lyrics by ZooNation’s Kate Prince, who this evening introduced us to some of the songs from the album and show performed by Knight and Rose. The energy is as electric as her casts. For those of us new to this work, she enthrals us before we’ve even heard a beat of what’s to come. And we are not disappointed.

Sylvia: The Essentials features music by Josh Cohen and DJ Walde and  the music brings hip-hop, rap and soul, injecting the story of then and bringing it right up to now! It works.

It’s so fantastic to see a strong female cast and story on stage and to meet and talk to both Beverley Knight and Sharon Rose on the night.  Knight opens the evening with the rousing March Women MarchRose sings the powerful Stand Up. And together they give us Suffrajitsu, which comes with a dance movement (taught to us by Prince later), which as the name implies, is a kind of Jujutsu to empower women.

We also enjoyed listening to Helen Pankhurst, the great-granddaughter of Emmeline Pankhurst. Helen spoke passionately about the show and its message.

It was a great evening, and we even took home a signed lyrics book.  We can’t wait to listen to the album in full anticipation of seeing the show. Look out for when it’s coming your way!  See listing for full tour dates.

Need to Know: The studio cast recording of SYLVIA: The Essentials is out now.  Take a listen.
