The American Clock opens at the start of the Wall Street Crash, 1929. We meet the Baum family as they navigate the aftermath of an unprecedented financial crisis, set to a pulsing soundtrack fusing 1920s swing and jazz with a contemporary sound. Arthur Miller’s groundbreaking play is about hope, idealism and a nation’s unwavering faith in capitalism.
In this version from director Rachel Chavkin (Hadestown, National Theatre), the central family will be played by three families of different ethnicities, changing during the course of the play to represent the evolution of the typical American household.
