Blacktress UK is proud to be co-producing this season in association with The SEVEN DIALS PLAYHOUSE. Continuing a relationship with the venue from the original Blacktress season, originally established as part of the John Thaw Initiative. The John Thaw Initiative was established in 2018 and is a showcase of innovative works-in-progress theatre. A season on the voices of Black British Women will give a platform to self-identifying Black Women and their shows.

The initiative offered a FREE platform to stage a performance and receive feedback from the audience. We have since levelled up and are now bringing you the season live and direct from the main stage! This season is a celebration of the multifaceted experience of Black British Women.

We are interested in your stories on race and identity, motherhood and sisterhood, faith and cultural practices, hair, gender, queerness, and everything in between. We want to encourage work that is unapologetic and specific to the experience of Black British Women. We define blacktress as a creative who identifies as a woman of African and Caribbean heritage and is looking for stories that reflect that experience.

We welcome applications from trans women and femmes as well as Non-Binary People but are aware this language is restrictive so encourage you to apply if you personally identify with the subject matter.

Submissions start in Spring 2023. Till then, we will be hosting several events to help us raise the money to fund this season.

NEED TO KNOW: The work will be will be performed in the 100-seater Seven Dials Playhouse from Late October – December 2023.
