The Dream – A Windrush Journey, By Nnenna Samson-Abosi

This stage adaptation of Nnenna Samson Abosi’s 2020 radio play celebrates the Windrush generation, cultural pride, and anti-racist history through theatre and storytelling. The Dream, was first performed as part of SPID Theatre’s Estate Endz community theatre programme and was inspired by the Mangrove 9, lived experience of the Wind rush generation, Race Relations Acts and Black Power movement, highlighting Black British activism and community resilience.

Set in the late 1960s and early 1970s, The Dream follows Delvin, a black British teenager whose Trinidadian parents, after travelling to the UK and settling in West London as part of the Windrush generation, experience violent racism and the wrath of police brutality. Delvin, being the first of his family born in the UK, must navigate questions of culture and identity as he assimilates into British Culture.

The current adaptation, directed by Fran Olivares brings to life the struggles, resilience, and activism of the Windrush generation in Britain, fusing drama and documentary to unearth vital oral histories from London’s Black communities. The Dream is an essential cultural work for anyone interested in Black British history.
