Introducing FOUNTAIN a unique film from dancer Alexandrina Hemsley’s company Yewande 103 which blends dance and digitally created watery environments.

This trailblazing, powerful work draws on the

symbolism of water as inevitably linked to Black histories, experiences and mental health.

Guided by a tightly woven improvisational movement score created by director and choreographer Hemsley, dancers Shahada Nantaba, Rickay Hewitt-Martin and Rudzani Moleya cycle through multiple and expansive states. Contrasting digital visual effects splash, vibrate, drench and flood the screen as the trio shift between being seen, mirrored and camouflaged by water.

FOUNTAIN situates itself amidst the colliding range and scale of experiences within Black subjectivities that water evokes: from the play of running through fountains in the summer, to the significance of oceanic passages and the impacts of colonial carving up of water and selves within Black existences.

Touring at Picturehouse Cinemas from the 24 September to 30 October – each screening will include either a special Q&A with Hemsley or exclusive behind-the-scenes footage.

All audience members will receive a free printed zine, featuring director Alexandrina Hemsley’s cut of text and images from Fountain, and space for the audience’s own reflections.
