Overspill, Soho Theatre
Following its premiere in Bromley, Ali Taylor’s poetic and high-energy thriller Overspill transfers to the West End. Ali Taylor’s play was produced by The Churchill in June after jointly winning its Arts Council funded playwrighting competition and will now receive a three week run at Soho Theatre. Overspill follows three young men on a night out in Bromley town centre. Their evening is all ‘booze and burgers’ until a bomb explodes in their beloved McDonald’s and the finger of suspicion is pointed at them.
The issues of youth crime and social exclusion are explored in this poetic, high energy thriller that is both funny and powerfully thought provoking. Overspill is directed by Tim Roseman (Joint Artistic Director of Theatre 503) with a cast including Danny Worters (Market Boy) and Syrus Lowe. Ali’s first play, Cotton Wool, received its UK premiere at Theatre 503 in April, after selling out at the Staatsschauspiel theatre in Dresden.
His radio play Eight Feet High And Rising, directed by Jessica Dromgoole, has been recorded for Radio 4’s Afternoon Play and will be broadcast later this year. He has also held an Avron Foundation Young Playwright’s Apprenticeship and had rehearsed readings of his plays at the Royal Court Upstairs and the Young Vic.
