Sutra: a Sadler’s Wells Production of Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Antony Gormley Szymon Brzóska with Monks from the Shaolin Temple

Sadler's Wells’ critically-lauded 2008 production Sutra returns to London, giving UK audiences another chance to experience this magical work. Now seen by over 90,000 people in 27 cities around the world, Sutra features dancer Ali Thabet (in the role originally performed by choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui) and set design by Turner Prize-winning artist Antony Gormley alongside 17 Buddhist monks from the original Shaolin Temple in China.

Sutra features breathtaking sequences of hypnotic movement set around Antony Gormley’s striking design of 21 wooden boxes which provide a compelling, ever-changing environment for the performers. Polish composer Szymon Brzóska crafts a serene score for five musicians, including piano, percussion and strings which is played live.

Aged between 11 and 27, The Monks performing in Sutraare from the original Shaolin Temple, situated near Dengfeng City in the Henan Province of China and established in 495AD by monks originating from India. In 1983, the State Council defined the Shaolin Temple as the key national Buddhist Temple. The monks follow a strict Buddhist doctrine, with kung fu and tai chi martial arts forming an integral part of their daily practice.

Sutra was recently listed as one of the top 10 dance events of the decade by The Sunday Times.
