The Maid

The MaidOdd Man Out Productions presents The Maid by Sheila White, directed by Vernon Douglas. A gritty, compelling, thought-provoking, darkly disturbing and witty tale of one woman's survival in a world where women sell women

A single woman (Sue) works within the sex industry as a maid. Today the phone won't stop ringing and punters are demanding bizarre requests. Sue is preoccupied as she may lose her livelihood, her world comes crashing down around her and she is forced to make a decision, which could change the course of her entire life.

Shelia White wrote The Maid, which won the Alfred Fagon Award. She has gone on to write a further four plays. A commission by The Tricycle Theatre, another had a reading at The Royal Court. Her development as an artist has led to Sheila working on a variety of themes from family, love and youth culture to the play, which she is currently writing that deals with stillbirth.

Vernon Douglas is the artistic director of Odd Man Out productions. He has assisted Michael Attenborough at The Almedia Theatre, Trevor Nunn at The Royal National and Femi Elufowoju Jr at Tiata Fahodzi. He is a member of the Genesis Young Directors Programme. He is currently working with the writer Matt Harris on a Tennesse Williams short story for the stage.

The Maid is at Rich Mix from 25 to 26 June, 7.30pm.
