Romeo and Juliet Docklands

Shakespeare’s tale of teenage knife crime, gang rivalry and arranged marriage is updated to the modern day Docklands in a production by Admiration Theatre. The East London based, physical theatre company are to stage the new version of Romeo and Juliet at The Space, situated in the Isle of Dogs. The Space is a multi-arts centre situated in a beautiful 19th century church, replete with stained glass windows. The venue is the biggest theatre in Tower Hamlets, and its location makes it an ideal base for the company to bring Romeo and Juliet to Docklands residents.

The company is particularly keen to engage local young people with the play, and is working with the Isle of Dogs Community Foundation to connect with nearby schools to offer students the chance to see the play for free.  Admiration attained critical acclaim for their all-female production of Ubu Roi at the Courtyard Theatre in 2004. Admiration was founded in 2001 by John Seaforth, Artistic Director.  He is a European trained physical theatre director, who with his company work on experimental approaches to performance, inspired by a wide range of practising artists, traditions and institutions, including Philippe Gaulier, Ella Jaroszewicz, Odin Teatret, the Grotowski Institute and others.
