Director: Stephen Unwin

Stephen Unwin directs a new generation of talent in Manfred Karge’s landmark play The Conquest of the South Pole. The cast is Chris Ashby, Sam Crane, Emma Cunniffe, O-T Fagbenle, Mark Field, Andrew Gower, Lauren Johns and Daniel Weyman. This new production comes 24 years since Stephen directed its celebrated UK premiere, which propelled the careers of a cast including Ewen Bremner and Alan Cumming. This bolt-of-energy play returns to the London stage as intensely theatrical, poetic and urgent as in 1988.

Out of work and on the dole, four young men find themselves faced with a reality full of fruitless jobcentre visits, dirty laundry, and too much time on your hands. Finding escape only through epic journeys of the imagination, they recreate Amundsen’s legendary 1911 attempt on the South Pole. The group struggle with the pitfalls of their imaginary expedition as vividly as with the despair that unites them.
