Her musical range and engaging temperament made her concert a pleasure to be a part of.

Yinka Davies is a phenomenal talent, as well as being a vocalist and entertainer she is a judge for one of Nigeria’s most popular reality TV shows, Nigerian Idol. I have known about her for many years and she has carved a successful career for herself across The African music scene.

Throughout her remarkable career she has sung with some incredible Nigerian music legends including Ayinde Barrister and Fatai Rolling Dollar, and two of my favourites Shina Peters and Lagbaja. She was also the featured singer on the great Tony Allen’s “Lagos No Shaking” album, which gave her the opportunity to tour across Europe in 2005.

Surprisingly, this was her first London show and in which she performed with an all star band performing songs from her own solo albums “Emi n’lo” and “Black Chiffon” and recently recorded songs. From the moment I walked into the Canada Water cultural arts space in I felt her unbelievable energy and passion. Yinka is not a shrinking violet, quite the opposite she is a luminous rose whose talent is underpinned with each and every note she sings.

Her musical range and engaging temperament made her concert a pleasure to be a part of and she certainly ensured that her audience were part of the experience. By inviting friends and relatives onto the stage to ask her questions or perform, she gave us an opportunity to learn more about her life and musical experiences. Would you believe that she is a completely self-taught artist with no musical training whatsoever? That’s what makes Yinka so dynamic. Her love of music comes from the heart, it comes from her ability to connect with every musical cord that she hears and translates it through her vocal ability. I adored Yinka, her authenticity is priceless and her talent should be world known. I only wish that she has a larger space, in a bigger space her voice deserves a much bigger space.

It was by no means a coincidence that the audience “requested” (demanded” an encore from Yinka, you can’t listen to her music in limitation, you need to enjoy it to its full extent.

Give yourself the gift of her music and spend some time in her musical company. You will not regret it.
