Hanisha Solomon Hanisha Solomon

Hanisha Solomon is a captivating, talented singer with a clean melodic and unapologetic voice for people, politics and love.

When I saw there was a female Ethiopian singer playing as part of the 13th London African Music Festival, I jumped at the chance because Hanisha Solomon was new to me so I had to check her out.

The venue is Canada Water Culture Centre, an intimate 150-seat theatre conveniently situated above the station and tucked within the Canada Water Library. Overall, the venue was good for the well-lit five-piece band. The acoustics were clear and there was enough space for the crowd to join the singer on stage.

The band were friendly towards their fans. The venue staff were helpful and relaxed which mirrored the feel of the even joining in the fun with the crowd on stage, smiling and happily going the extra mile to encourage the audience to buy the singer’s CD after the show.

Shows like these seem to create a ‘solidarity' vibe. Some learnt the traditional Ethiopian dance the ‘Eskista’. Response to the band was good, and although it was not a standout show, people were on their feet dancing.

The favourite song of the evening was the popular, ‘Addis Ababa’ to celebrate the recent New Year for Ethiopians.

The use of the traditional Ethiopian instrument worked perfectly with their sound set up. The favourite song of the evening was the popular song about ‘Addis Ababa’ to celebrate the recent New Year for Ethiopians. The singer let the fans sing and scream several parts of the popular anthem. Flowers were provided for us to join in the celebrations.

Hanisha moved beautifully in the space when she took several pauses from singing in different Ethiopian dialects. She is a captivating talented singer with a clean melodic and unapologetic voice for people, politics and love. Although I did not sweat, she found a fan in me that night.

Info: Hanisha Solomon performed at Canada Water Culture Space as part of the 13th African Music Festival on Wednesday 23 September 2015. Visit the Joyful Noise website for the full festival line up. The festival runs until Sunday 27 September 2015.
