17th Annual WhatsOnStage Awards 17th Annual What's On Stage Awards

‘What’s on Stage’ is one of the main websites for tickets, news, and information regarding plays, comedies, and musicals, on the London stage.

As such, their 17th annual awards on 19th February 2017 are a big deal.

In preparation for this event, the award nominations – to be voted for by the public via the ‘What’s on Stage’ website - were announced at London’s Café de Paris. Skillfully presented by the talented Steve Furst, the event – as well as giving sponsors an opportunity to meet, greet, drink, and eat – gave us awards nominations in the following categories:

  • Best supporting actress in a play.
  • Best actor in a play.
  • Best supporting actress in a musical
  • Best supporting actress in a musical
  • Best choreography
  • Best costume
  • Best set design
  • Best lighting
  • Best video design
  • Best direction
  • Best play revival
  • Best musical revival
  • Best new play
  • Best new musical
  • Best ‘off West End’ production
  • Best Regional production
  • Best actress in a musical
  • Best actor in a musical
  • Best actress in a play
  • Best actor in a play
  • Best West End show

The proceedings were rounded off with the current touring cast of Rent’s live rendition of the show’s signature song, ‘Seasons of love’.

It was interesting to note that there didn’t seem to be any nominations for the popular ‘Motown the Musical’, and there are other omissions from the final ballot that could stir similarly fierce debate (some of which I could name). This does bring up the timely question: ‘who chooses our choices’ (?)

Still, if one decides to engage with the process, the nominees can be found - and voted for - simply by logging on to http://awards.whatsonstage.com

May the best available nominees win.
