Back for the second year running, Gospel Essence Choir will perform at the third annual Afridiziak Gifts and Occasions Winter Fair, this Saturday. We caught up with the choir’s founder, Rebecca Amissah to find out more about the group’s journey.

When was the choir established?

I started the choir back in 2009

How was the choir formed?

I rounded up all my friends that were singers and looked for opportunities for us to perform.

Can you remember your first performance together?

Yes, it was for a beautiful wedding. We made the bride cry as I had created an original a cappella arrangement of Beyoncé’s Ave Maria for her as she walked down the aisle.

Did you all ever imagine yourself being in a gospel choir?

I have always sung in choirs but must admit I never imagined running one.

How did the name ‘Gospel Essence’ come about?

I wanted a name that would express what it is we do, which is adding an element of gospel to any song at any occasion.

Do you write any of your own music?

Yes I am a songwriter and I am planning to teach the choir some parts to complement my original music next year.

What can we look forward to hearing from you this year at the Afridiziak Gifts and Occasions Winter Fair?

More Christmas tunes with a few pop songs, which have been given the Gospel Essence treatment.

Where can we expect to hear from you in the future?

We have just finished recording a Christmas album for a company who distribute in every Job centre in the UK, so if you pop in to one, that'll be us!

If you could all perform with anyone, who would it be?

I have always sung in choirs but must admit I never imagined running one.

I would love us to sing with Jennifer Hudson or work with Kirk Franklin that would be amazing.

What are you most looking forward to at this year’s Afridiziak Gifts and Occasions Winter Fair?

I personally am looking forward to getting hold of some natural hair products and possibly a pair of African print heels. There were loads of great stuff last year, we're really looking forward to it… Oh and some rum cake!
