Hampstead Theatre is looking for up to 10 playwrights interested in attending a series of workshops led by Olivier Award winner Mike Bartlett.

Writing the Bigger Picture

Over the course of eight weeks, playwrights will focus on dramatic action, theme and purpose, structure, dialect, dramatising ideas, form, and character arcs – all with an overview of how to write for bigger stages.  Through online sessions, Mike will share the writing tools he uses in group workshops as well as offer one-to-one mentoring. The course may culminate in the sharing of a group-written play, which we hope will be able to take place live at Hampstead.

The workshops will take place weekly on Zoom – running every Thursday from 18 March 4pm – 6pm. The group-written play will be shared after the course’s final session on a date TBC.

Participating playwrights will receive a bursary of £1,000 for attending the 8 weeks. Travel expenses will be provided should playwrights need to travel for the final session featuring the group-written play. Please note, accommodation expenses cannot be made available.

Applicants must be:

  • Aged 18 and above
  • UK based
  • Free for all 8 weeks of the designated session slot
  • Have had at least one play produced professionally (this includes at a fringe venue)
